Skills are not acquired overnight — a lot of time and effort is being put in to hone them.
Meet the owner, Mr C K Tan. A self-built man, he started his own freight forwarding company and succeeded in growing the business. However, he felt that something was amiss; that he had been barking up the wrong tree and chasing the wrong interest.
Epiphany struck when in Perth, at a small cafe, Mr Tan tasted one of their chocolates. That sparked his interest to learn how to make chocolates. Not just chocolate, but the best ones.
His newfound passion led him to travel to Italy and Melbourne to learn from professional chocolatiers. Two years were put into training, and upon returning, Mr Tan started his very own ‘Chocolate Factory’ in 2018, right here in Singapore.
Mr Tan found joy in making chocolates for his friends and family, often garnering praises from the people who tasted his chocolates. He then realized that his passion not only lies in making chocolates, but also putting a smile on people’s faces.
Despite the opinions of those who did not believe in him, and of those who advised him to rethink this retirement plan of his, Mr Tan pushed through and continues to dedicate himself to mastering the art of chocolate making.
Looking back, becoming a chocolatier might’ve always been his true calling; his first encounter with couverture chocolate in a small province in the south of France some 30 years ago was deeply etched in his memory.
After relocating to North Bridge Road in the midst of the pandemic, Mr Tan devoted his time and effort into building MasBie despite the hardships in the way.
His final goal is to contribute to society; by encouraging entrepreneurship among youths, to teach them not to be fearful of what lies ahead, and to eventually provide employment opportunities to the persons with special needs.
Proudly created in Singapore, Mr Tan hopes to deliver exceptional taste and quality at an affordable price.
MasBie now offers a wide selection of handmade artisan chocolates and gelato, often incorporating local flavours like Ondeh Ondeh and Jackfruit into their desserts.
